How to Maintain the Joy of Living Alone

Living alone can be a fulfilling experience even without feeling lonely. However, you may experience seasons of loneliness. Some people say that loneliness is a state of the mind, while being alone is a physical condition. In essence, you can be alone without feeling lonely.

As someone who began living on my own in my 30s, it took me some time to adjust to not living with anyone else, but myself.

For the most part, I’ve adjusted well. However, there are times when I wish there were people waiting for me at home. Due to my experience, here are some strategies I believe will help you and me continue to enjoy living alone:

7  Strategies to Help You Embrace and Enjoy Your Solo Lifestyle:

  1. Maintain social connections: Stay in touch with friends and family through calls, video chats, or social media. Join online communities or interest groups to meet new people with similar interests.
  2. Engage in hobbies and activities: Find activities you enjoy and that can be done alone, such as cooking, reading, writing, painting, or hiking (some of the activities I enjoy).
    • Explore new hobbies or learn new skills to keep yourself engaged. You can use this time to also engage in creative pursuits. Creativity can be a powerful outlet for self-expression and can help you find meaning and fulfillment in solitude.
  3. Seek inspiration from others: Engage with books, podcasts, YouTube videos, or documentaries that explore the themes of solitude, self-discovery, and personal growth.
    • Learning from the experiences and perspectives of others can provide guidance and inspiration on embracing solitude.
  4. Establish a routine: Create a daily routine that includes activities you find fulfilling. This can help provide structure and a sense of purpose, which can reduce feelings of loneliness that might arise.
  5. Focus on personal growth: Set personal goals and dedicate time to self-improvement. This could involve learning new skills, taking online courses, working on personal projects, or starting a news business. Engaging in such activities can be empowering and fulfilling as you embrace living alone.
  6. Volunteer or help others: Helping others can provide a sense of connection and purpose, while also expanding your social circle.
  7. Stay physically active: Regular exercise has been linked to improved mood and overall well-being. Find ways to stay active, such as going for walks, following workout videos, and engaging with nature. I find that spending time outdoors on a walk or hike, can have a calming effect and help foster a sense of peace and contentment in being alone.

Being alone and living alone isn’t a bad feat, however, there are times when you may feel overwhelmed by your living situation.

Remember, feeling lonely at times is normal, but seeking ways to navigate these feelings while living alone is essential.

P.S.: Welcome to August!
